This is the last week of grading for the final progress report of the year. Students are beginning to count down the days until summer. Please continue to help your student to stay focused throughout the last nine-week grading period. By keeping the same, successful study habits they demonstrated the first three nine-weeks they set themselves up to continue on a successful path next school year. Help them to remember that school is not over just yet!
Here are some details for this week:
Relay for Life The Conway community really comes together in this worthwhile cause to find a cure for cancer. The event is at the same location as last year, Southport Park, and starts this Friday evening at 6:00 PM and continues through Saturday afternoon. We welcome all to come out and support our teams. All students must be accompanied by an adult.
End of the Year Schedule The schedule for the last two weeks of school is now posted on the CMS school calendar. It includes the mandatory test days for the four core courses (Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math), team award celebrations and class party. You can click here to download and print a pdf version of this schedule to put on your refrigerator.
Construction update The renovation of Conway has started a little sooner than expected. The most major change so far is removing a line of portables in order to make room for the emergency response lane that will encircle the entire campus. One of the portables to go was the sixth grade office, which has been relocated to portable 311. The teachers effected are Ms. Hubbell, Ms Miller, Mr. Greenwood, Ms. Sharma, Ms. Knight and Ms. Berlin. Their extensions have not changed, but please check their web pages for new room or portable numbers.
The sixth grade bike rack was also in the egress lane and has been moved to the front of the teacher parking lot. One other change of note is the YMCA office has been moved from the portable near the gym to room 157.
Will your rising 7th grader be ready to start school next year? Be aware that State Law requires all incoming 7th graders to be up to date with their immunizations before the first day of school in August 2008. The Orange County Health Department is offering free immunizations, including the chickenpox vaccine, from 8AM until noon and 1PM until 2PM Monday through Thurday and 8AM until 11AM on Fridays. This is for all children who don't have insurance, have insurance that does not cover immunizations, have Medicaid or children who are American Indian or Alaskan Native. They see patients on a walk in basis only. To confirm whether your child is in or out of compliance, kindly contact Ms. Rivera at (407) 249-6420, ext 252 or email at rafaela.rivera@ocps.net for further information.
Does your child have a Myspace account? Are you aware that you must be 14 years of age to qualify for a Myspace account? Lying about your age in order to socialize online with your friends is a bad precident to set. This site has proven to be a dangerous place for those not mature enough to handle content found here. If your child is old enough to have an account, when was the last time YOU monitored it? Members can post any picture they want, including provocative ones, and use any language, including the type that you would not approve of. Help you child to be a responsible and ethical online user by monitoring what they post.
Do you know what time school lets out? The school day is over at 2:50 PM on Wednesday and 3:50 PM every other day. More and more students that are picked up by car are hanging around school where there is no supervision. Students are to be picked up promptly when school ends. Please adhere to these times in order to assure your child's safety. If you cannot pick up your child by that time, the YMCA offers free, supervised, after school care that you can enroll your child in.
Do you know what your child is eating for lunch? By setting up an online lunch account through My Lunch Money you can add funds, monitor purchases and control spending. It is easy to set up with your child's student ID. Plus, you will be able to make sure they are eating something healthy rather than just a bag of chips, a cookie and a slushie.
Rainy Day Plan You should have a rainy day plan in place for picking up your child from school if they are normally walkers or bike riders. Please review the pick-up procedures on the back of the parent handbook that went home the first week.
Dress Expectations, Cell Phones, and Sunglasses Please continue to review the Dress Expectations and Cell Phone Policy in the Parent Handbook that went home with your child. Double t-shirts, objectionable symbols, tank tops and spaghetti straps are not approved items. Please make sure you know exactly what your child is wearing to school each day. Cell phones and sunglasses must be packed away and not seen during school hours from 9:20 AM until 3:50 PM. Cell phones MUST BE OFF. Students will be held accountable for adhering to these policies, and parents may be asked to bring or pick up needed items from school.
